Valentine's 2017 - a simple DIY card
Although I'm not a big fan of Valentine's Day itself, there is something I like about the way it inevitably encourages us to spend a bit of time thinking about and appreciating all the loved ones in our lives at this time of year. It's a special thing to do or make something for someone else, just to show them that you love and cherish them, whether that's your lover, your friends, your parents, grandparents or even your children.
The gentle process of making this card, and looking through our wedding photos, made me remember all over again what I love about R and how much I appreciate and cherish him. I'm grateful to Valentine's day for making me carve out a bit of time to think about that!
This card is totally customise-able so you could make it for anyone you love!
To make it you will need:
- Piece of A5 card folded in half
- Piece of A6 card in the same colour as the A5 piece
- PVA glue plus brush
- Craft knife
- Heart template (I used this template, which has lots of different sized hearts)
- Photograph of you and your loved one
Step 1: Cut out your heart template and place it onto the right hand side of your folded A5 card (the side that will be the front of the card). Draw around one side of the heart with your pencil. Join up the top and bottom points of the heart with a faint pencil line.
Step 2: Using your craft knife, carefully cut around the curved outline of the heart, making sure not to cut along the vertical line.
Step 3: Once you've finished carving along the line, gentle fold the half heart out along the vertical line.
Step 4: Position your photo behind the open side of the heart so that it shows through.
Step 5: Cut your photograph down so that it doesn't poke out from the edges of the card. Then, when you are happy with the position of the photo in the heart, stick the photo down to the inside of the card using glue or washi tape.
Step 6: Take your piece of A6 card and glue around its edges. Then press it down over the photograph on the inside of the card. That's it, you're done!
You may want to add some text to the front of your card - you could put it on the folded out heart half like I did, or anywhere else you fancy!
Happy Valentine's day to you! Do you celebrate it or mark it in some way? Let me know if you make one of these cards, or something else to give to your loved one!
